Winter holiday in Hebden

This winter take a holiday where you will be immersed in nature when you step out the door, but with the convenience of shops, cafes and independent shops just 5 minutes walk.

We’ve all heard how important it is to be outside this winter, and here at Mayroyd Mill House we make it really easy to enjoy. You can sit in the garden amid sculptural grasses and watching the river flow. The sun shines through the bare trees giving you a warming hug as you stroll round the garden. You can watch the heron in the river, the geese on the canal or search for evidence of other birds and small mammals.

Just outside the door you can walk through Crow Nest Woods, go up onto the moors, wander along the canal path or take a strenuous walk up Cragg Vale or Stoodly Pike.

When you get back home there is plenty of room for muddy wellies, big kitchen for sitting round with a post walk hot chocolate, and two comfy reception rooms to relax for the evening.

We’re open!

We opened up on July 4th with some lovely guests staying! They left us a lovely message.

We’re ‘Good to Go’ accredited.

We’re just waiting for you to come back for a holiday with us in Hebden Bridge

Creative retreat

If your holiday time is an opportunity to feel inspired and creative then Mayroyd Mill House has space for you!

You can come and stay for creative inspiration anytime – Hebden is full of artists and opportunities.

Just at the house you could:

Draw in the garden – we have large gardens planted with many interesting plants, the house as a spectacular background, surrounded by trees and the river at the end. You could set up to draw or paint in the garden and just pop inside for snacks when you want them. There is an art shop (Word of Mouth) in Hebden Bridge if you need anything.

Photography – The light in the North Peninnes produces wonderful landscapes and with the gorgeous trees, industrial heritage and canals there are many opportunities to practice your photography. If you want some tips then look at the work of local photographers.

Pottery workshop – Mayroyd Mill House shares space with Crow Nest Pottery (find them on Etsy and Instagram) and you can book a 2 hour ‘Intro to Pottery’ session onsite!

Hebden Bridge is full of art spaces, festivals, galleries and maker-events. Keep an eye on Hebdenbridge.org

Could you canoe?

Mayroyd Mill House is a unique holiday house for your getaway break.

Look out the front and you watch the canal…look out the back windows and watch the river Calder.

If you want to try something new – what about canoe or paddleboard down the canal? Going from Mayroyd Mill House towards Sowerby Bridge you’ll go through a canal tunnel under the main road and through the peaceful Mytholmroyd and on towards the canal junctions near Sowerby Bridge. You can get a day license from  Canal and Rivers Trust (https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/buy-your-boat-licence/short-term-visitor-licences).

Or look up Halifax Canoe Club to see if you can join them in their river course?

Bike ideas for your get-away with us.

If you’re bringing your own bikes you’ll find plenty of space to store them inside (downstairs in the cellar if they’re muddy) and an outside tap in the garden if they need a wash. If you want to hire bikes for your weekend adventures then just contact the amazing folk at Blazing Saddles (https://blazingsaddles.co.uk/).

Hebden Bridge is set up for all kinds of biking.

You could follow a road route that was used in the Tour de Yorkshire (come and stay during the Tour de Yorkshire weekend for a bike filled weekend) or take the Cragg Vale Challenge – can you get to the top of the longest continuous hill in England (8km of continuous uphill!) – it starts just 1.5km from leaving your front door at MMH along Route 66.

Or take to the hills – there are plenty of challenging roads and paths that go uphill and down dale along the valley sides and up towards the moors. Local routes and maps available from cycle Calderdale (https://www.cyclecalderdale.co.uk/)  or Blazing Saddles.

For an extreme downhill challenge try Havok Downhill Bike Park (http://www.havokbikepark.com) in Cornholme (20mins drive towards Burnley from MMH).

Bike sustrans route 66: Mayroyd Mill House is on Sustrans Route 66 (https://www.sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/route-66/) , so you just hop on your bike right out of the front door and head off for a day of exploring on cycle routes that will take you through beautiful scenary, passing canal path pubs, and able to explore the industrial heritage of the northern peninnes. This is also a great route for kids to try. We often cycle down Route 66 to go swimming at Sowerby Bridge Swimming Pool – there is always a train option home again from Sowerby Bridge to Hebden Bridge (you can take bikes on trains in West Yorkshire subject to space being available on the train…no need to book)

From the moment you arrive…

…Relaxing space, coffee watching the canal, eat outdoors, yoga by the river, get on your bikes, find a wonderful cafe…

From the first evening of your holiday..

Staying at Mayrpyd Mill House you can have a creative, active, relaxing holiday. Our blog will help you plan a unique Hebden Bridge getaway.

Have a restful first evening. From one of the two living rooms you can watch the canal boats and people strolling along…or gaze into the beautiful back gardens as birds swoop across and the trees and plants waft in the breeze.

Take a walk in the gardens of MMH. Even though you are in the middle of Hebden Bridge you’ll feel like you’re miles from anywhere. Whatever time of year you visit there are flowers, grasses, ferns and shrubs along the meandering pathways. Sit on a bench near the river that flows along the end of the garden – you might spot herons or kingfishers.

Order your dinner from one of the many wonderful cafes and take-aways from Hebden Bridge. Like many of us, they have survived flood and Covid19 restrictions and appreciate your support while you stay here. Enjoy your dinner at the table in the garden where you can sit outside and enjoy the peacefulness of being away from it all.

There is a park just 2 minutes walk from the house if your children want to run and play after a long journey including a play park, tennis court, stakepark and large grassy area.

After feeling like you’ve arrived and your holiday has started, fall into a comfortable bed knowing that tomorrow will be full of more surprises.
